CONCEPT

Mediglotte is an independent, non-profit project, built on the free sharing of knowledge. It depends on no organisation, public or private.

The core idea is to solve an everyday problem in healthcare: the language barrier. Patients who do not speak the local language often turn up in care facilities. When it is not an emergency, we can call on a translator, a relative, or at least someone who speaks the language. Otherwise, we have to act fast, and alone: that is daily life in emergency departments and mobile emergency units.

That is exactly where Mediglotte comes in: with a broad, standardised vocabulary base covering all the essential questions of the emergency clinical examination, it is the new essential tool for any caregiver to: — confirm or rule out the urgency of a condition; — provide appropriate care to the patient while explaining the essentials of their condition; — rule out a contagious disease or medical contraindications to treatment.

Mediglotte also has its place on field missions abroad, or in reception centres for tourists and migrants, to detect a medical emergency and alert a care facility.

No internet connection and no account are needed: all the data ships inside the application.

Caregivers face several situations:
— patients at the extremes of age, who rarely speak several languages;
— people in precarious situations, for whom another question arises: literacy in their own mother tongue.

That is why a phonetic transcription is provided for non-Latin alphabets. So that the answers can be understood, every question is closed-ended (yes/no answer, with both words shown at the top of each tab).

The language of the app also follows the language of the user's phone, so that each caregiver can use Mediglotte in their own language.

With more than 300 words and sentences, grouped by theme, in each of the languages available, Mediglotte focuses on emergency medicine vocabulary, translated by healthcare professionals who are native speakers, and covers every continent.

The goal is also to promote a free and open exchange of knowledge between healthcare professionals worldwide: a sort of Wikipedia of medical vocabulary.

If you would like to take part, add a missing language, report errors or suggest improvements, please get in touch.

This application generates no revenue. If you wish to make a donation, give it to an NGO. And if you want to support Mediglotte, share it as widely as you can, so that it reaches as many people as possible and offers as much vocabulary as possible.
